No Redeeming Social Value

www.nrsv.com

What do get when you mix Olde English and hardcore? You get songs like 'Drunken Frenzy' and 'Bite My Ass'. You get a band called No Redeeming Social Value that has been rocking the NYHC scene for about a decade and is still sticking to their malt liquor madness. We interviewed the lead singer Dean:

Its been a year and a half since THC. What's up next for the charcoal filtered fanatics? New album?

Actually, we're currently about to go to the studio (this April) to record some of our new stuff. We're gonna do a 4 or 5 song E.p. containing all new material. Probally the best so far. The CD is also gonna contain 3 videos or so at the end - for use on your computer. So it'll be a pretty cool little package. We'd like to do a full length CD sometime before the end of the summer...but, we'll see. The EP is first and then we'll look past that. No definate titles yet for the EP, but some song titles are called -
"Pregnant Teenage Girls on Crack Cocaine", "Light's Out", and "I hate Everyone" just to name a few.

You guys have had a shitload of lineup changes. What does the crew looklike these days?

Well, the crew is the same old freaks that've always been around drinking old-E.But if your talking about actual instrumentation - the band consists of Kent(guitar), Dean (vox), Scott (bass & Trout), Insane James (beats the drums),
Alan (gut & bong). Recently, we had our old singer & spiritual adviser Mad Mike D. do a song w/ us for a compilation on Radical Records. Also, our man Vinny
Value is always popping in for projects - he was on the drums on THC and also vocals on a recent compilation. So you never know who's next -- we've corrupted
many, and few escape unscathed.

You guys certainly differ yourselves from the typical NYC hardcore looking band. What do these hood ass looking new jacks think of your style?

Well, actually i'm not that sure what anyone thinks of us, also, we don't really care. NRSV never cared about making a good impression - thus the name No Redeeming Social Value. So, it's hard to say??!! I mean we get a great response
when we play and we play w/ all kinds of bands from HC to Punk to SKA to MEtal. I mean we just do our thing cause we like to have a good time and this is the way it goes down. We simply play the music that we like - if others like it
that's cool too, if not that's cool too. We're usually too drunk or high to care anyhow. There's lots of new bands that I like and respect. Hopefully they feel the same way about us. But either way, it's not gonna slow us down. We're fueled by OLDE-E.

Whats the touring schedule looking like right now?

At the moment, we're doing regional shows on the east coast...NY, NJ, CT. , MD.
PA. etc...where ever we can easily get to in a few hours. WE'll probally go on tour again in the spring/ summer. That's usually our move. There's lots of great festivals in Europe in the spring and we like to get involved in that.
Also, we are dedicating our time at the moment to the new material and recording it. So although we're not going cross country at the moment, we're playing quite a bit. Touring is a blast!! One of my favorite aspects of being in a band. Hopefully, we'll see sunny Cali again sometime very soon.

Whats some of your influnces besides Iron Maiden?

Oh my. I could go on for hours. But mostly our influences are OLDE-English 800 and whatever other free or cheap beer we can get hold of. OLDE-E inspired us to get a band together many years ago and we're happy to say that OLDE-E is just as much of an inspiration as when we first drank it. But if you're talking musical influences, they pretty much run the entire gamut. Pretty much everyone in the band listens to pretty much every different kind of music - almost. For example in my CD player at the moment is: Kool Keith, Mephiskapheles, Warzone, Rocker's Hi-Fi, and Peter Tosh. Of course, old school hardcore is a main influence and inspiration. So i dunno what that means - probally too much drugs or something. Also, in our song writing we're pretty much influenced by the stupidity and absurdity of the world
and our own experiences, herein. But, mostly BEER - we love BEER!!

Whats the best or some of the best chick stories you've had since touring in NRSV?

No comment!!! Well, o.k. maybe one comment - topless punk/ Hardcore chicks are the sexiest. (assuming they have decent guns). In one such experience, many moons ago, we played our first "out of state" gig in Baltimore, MD. It was our
first naked chick experience. As we played punk rock grrrls ran around the club w/ their tops off, tits flying, it was great!!

How long are you gonna keep up NRSV and you think you will get your recognition with tyhe likes of SOIA etc., someday?

Well you see, that's the whole thing that probally keeps us going - i mean when we started, we didn't even know how to play our instruments, but we didn't care!! We just had fun and we still do!! So therefore, we don't really care what
happens as long as we're having fun and playing the music we love. The only recognition we're interested in is by the people that come to the shows to sing along and dance and get down. And that's not recognition - that's what
Hardcore is about.

How are the guido guys doing back in queens? Thats one thing I DONT miss about home?

Oh my!! Anyone that has ever been to Queens (or Long Island for that matter will tell you this is the greasy Guido capital of the world. The place is outta control. I mean it was bad in the late 80's early 90's but it's gotten worse.
We're under siege from the planet guido. Guido's are still crusing, and stinking of cologne, and stealing our girls. Some things never change. Some guidos have even invaded the Hardcore scene - they're undercover. But they're not fooling us!!! We know who they are and will expose them when the time is right! One thing that we need in the HArdcore scene is we have to unite and keep the Guido's out - or next thing you know the pit will be stinking of cologne and be littered w/ gold chains. yikes!!!

Wanna add any shit talkin?

Ok...i'm always down for that - shit god-damed muther shiting asshole. Piss ass shit bag!! You know, in fact, SHITBOMBS!! Shitbombs to everyone!!! Fuck that,
man, here's shit in your eye. Why don't you take a shit in your hat and pull it down over your head. That's a favoite saying of my mother. She's a sailor.

Did you ever think about contacting Olde and asking
them to give you some free shit for promoting them. Its worth a shot.

Actually we're the unofficial 0LDE-ENGLISH 800 poster band. We represent our favoite beer to the fullest wherever we go -esp. since everywhere we are we're drinking it. As far as our official relationship w/ OLDE-E goes, i am advised
not to comment other than to say : OLDE-E, OLDE-E always got the bottle in my hand, OLDE-E, OLDE-E drink it with the hardcore band.

Have any of you guys ever fucked any chicks in any bands that you toured with and who was it?

Well, we've fucked lots of bands we've toured with but we the bands we toured w/ are uglier than Paul from Sheer Terror - who we fucked, by the way. We used to have a little affair going w/ Rick from Comin Correct - but it's no longer hot and heavy affair. Nowadays, most guys in HC bands are fat dudes. No one wants to fuck them.We would like to tour w/ the Devotchkas. We actually played a
show w/ em in Germany a few months ago....but no good stories sorry. We'll have to plan more shows w/ them.

If you dont mind me asking, who are some of the biggest dicks in hardcore? Someone inside told me that some of these DMS guys are assholes, although i met Ezec and he seemed pretty cool.

Honestly, the only dudes i know in the Hardcore scene are the guys in NRSV and Awkward Thought and i can say for sure that they're all a bunch of dicks. Oh, yeah, Grey Area - they're dicks too! But if you wanna talk about the 'biggest
dicks' that's definately NRSV - we've got the biggest dicks in hardcore. Some peopole say i'm a skinhead, others say i'm an evil genius, i'm really just a hardcore superstar with an extra- large penis.

Thanks man, and start touring the west so that people can watch and enjoy a solid entertaining hardcore band.

Thank YOU for the interview and the oppty. to spread the NRSV reality. It's been a while since we've been to Cali. but, once the new record is done, we'll be back to steal your girls and fuck your beer. Until, then, don't forget the struggle, don't forget NRSV, don't forget to drink OLDE-E. 'cause it's thebest!!

Five Seconds Expired

> 1. Its been a couple of years and here you guys are back again. Why did you guys get back?

This is not a "reunion" per say. It is simply a continuation of our work from where we left it 3 years ago. Three of the four members have stayed
together during this time (as Minimus) and all involved have remained good friends. So it was only a matter of time. We are doing this now
because the timing is right for the four of us. As long as the scheduling fits in with our other projects and "real life", we will be "in da hieeouse".

> 2.How did things go with your other projects Minimus and Non Compos Mentis?

Things went well, and are still going well. Non Compos (with Jeff - vocals) released two albums and have, at least for now, ended. Minimus
(with Gary-drums, Josh-guitar, and Shaun-bass) released a four-song EP and is still together. Minimus is in the process of recording, mixing and
mastering a full length album to be released in 2001.
Right now most of our collective time is for 5 Seconds Expired.

> 3. I listened to your new tune 'Memory' and it sounds tight. It definitely is a little different than the 'Null' material. Whats the >direction for you
guys now.

Thank you, glad you like "Memory". We do not write for any particular style of music, we all have different influences (and a lot of
them) so we never really know what the end result will be until we're done. We just write what sounds good to us, and try to make it rock in the
process! To answer your question, the direction of 5 Seconds Expired is "forward, never straight".

> 4. I actually found the cd from your Slush days out here in SoCal. Is there any way for people to get that material anymore?

Slush released two four-song EP's in the mid-ninties, released on our own label. When the band signed with Another Planet/Profile Records in
1996 we changed our name to 5 Seconds Expired (when "Null" was released) to avoid some potential legal conflicts with the Slush name. There
is no Slush music available. I don't even think you could find it on Napster.
Although we do still play a couple old songs live.
*Beware, there is (or was) another band from SoCal named Slush ...it is NOT us unless it is from Burlington, VT.

> 5. Has there been any labels in contact with you about your new stuff, and what labels have been mentioned.

We have sent many copies out, and have had good responses. At this point we are moving ahead without any label support.

> 6.Do you have any tour plans?

We will play as much as we can. But without distribution for the album, tour support or any other support there will not be a full-time playing
opportunity for us. We all have a life outside the band as well. We would love to tour as much as possible if we had the chance.

> 7. What are some of your guys influences?

We all have different influences, here is a brief list:

Gary Williams (drums): King's X, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Faith No More, Quicksand, Pink Floyd, and new age/world/Celtic music.

Jeff Howlett (vocals): Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Van Halen, Kiss, and Herbie Hancock.

Josh Cooper: (Guitar): Tool, Quicksand, Helmet, Pink Floyd, Rush, and Yes.

Shaun Varney (bass): Mr. Bungle, Quicksand, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Tool, and Mozart

> 8. I think with this new metal bullshit coming out, we could use a solid band hard edged band like 5seconds. Whats your take on >rock music
these days.

My response to most "radio format modern metal" would not even be as enthusiastic as yours! Some new(er) bands that I personally like are:
Refused, At The Drive-In, and Jeff gave me a copy of the Deftones "white Pony" album.

Speaking for myself, the King's X album "Please Come Home, Mr. Bulbous" (on Metal Blade Records) is the most amazing music I have ever
heard in my whole life. I'm actually not sure what the other guys are currently listening to.
The bands mentioned are all good, creative, expressive music. I would love to see 5 Seconds Expired get an opportunity to reach the same
audiences these bands have. I think we would fit right in.

> 9. You guys got a nice following in your home state Vermont, what other territories are good for you guys?

Any band that ever wants to do well anywhere has to have local support. We have done well at home, around New England and/or the upper
East Coast section of the country, they have always supported us.

> 10. Thanks for the time, have you got anything to add?
